SUMMARY:Film Discussion: Brother Outsider
DESCRIPTION:On November 20\, 2013\, Bayard Rustin was posthumously awarded the prestigious\nPresidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Who was this man? He\nwas there at most of the important events of the Civil Rights Movement – but always\nin the background. BROTHER OUTSIDER asks “Why?” It presents a vivid drama\,\nintermingling the personal and the political\, about one of the most enigmatic figures\nin 20th-century American history. \nOne of the first “freedom riders\,” an adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and A.\nPhilip Randolph\, organizer of the march on Washington\,was  intelligent\, gregarious\, and\ncharismatic\, Bayard Rustin was denied his place in the limelight for one reason – he\nwas gay. This film contributes a fascinating new chapter to our understanding of both\nprogressive movements and gay life in 20th-century America. \nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film\n(Course ID #207165)

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: My Transgender Life
DESCRIPTION:In observance of Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance\, please join us to discuss the film My Transgender Life: Seven Members of the Transgender Community Share Their Stories.\nA moving documentary on what it’s like to be transgender\, to grow up in the wrong gender and eventually transition to a different sex. A documentary designed to record\, share and celebrate the personal stories of transgender women and men and their stories of struggle\, of courage and of triumph. Though they vary in age\, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds\, each person has fought to cast off the gender assigned to them at birth and embrace their true selves. The decision to transition from one gender to another is a life changing one not just for the transgender person but for their family and friends. Male or female\, boy or girl? Most of us can answer that question without a second thought\, but for some people\, the answer isn’t so simple. Encouraging classroom discussion\, this program helps students to think of the differences in each of us in a positive way\, breaking stereotypes\, acceptance\, challenging prejudice and increasing visibility for the transgender community.\n Three (3) Cultural Competency Points earned with attendance!\nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #122127)\nWatch it on Kanopy here! \nParticipants are encouraged to watch the film prior to the film discussion.\nFilms are not shown during the discussion.\n \nMy Transgender Life (Course ID #122127)_Flyer

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: Coming of Age in Cherry Grove
DESCRIPTION:The History of the First LGBTQ Community U.S. \nFounded in 1869\, Cherry Grove (Fire Island\, NY) is considered by most to be the first openly LGBTQ community in the United States. This film tells the stories of a variety of long-term residents and what they find so wonderful about life in Cherry Grove. \nWinner of Best Short Film at the Los Angeles Film Review Independent Film Awards \nFind it here and watch for free with your Phoenix Public Library Card! \n \nCherry Grove (Course ID #122123)_Flyer \nThree (3) Cultural Competency Points earned with attendance! \nParticipants are encouraged to watch the film prior to the film discussion. \nFilms are not shown during the discussion.

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: El Canto del Colibri
DESCRIPTION:Much like the seldom-heard song of the hummingbird\, the voices of Latino fathers are\nrarely heard in addressing LGBTQ issues. This film aims to amplify their voices.\n“El Canto del Colibrí\,” is a story of Latino fathers dealing with issues of immigration\,\nfaith\, marriage equality\, machismo\, culture\, and the process of their LGBTQ children\ncoming out. Responding to requests from “Tres Gotas de Agua” audiences around the\nworld\, the filmmakers are taking this journey by inviting Latino men to speak frankly about\ndelicate and deeply personal topics. This film will address political issues about LGBTQ\nfamilies\, social oppression\, shared responsibility and acceptance of LGBTQ people as\nmembers of Latino families.\nThe filmmakers will bring you real stories\, Latino immigrant fathers’ stories\, with\ninterviews and interactions with family members\, and their everyday lives in their\ncommunities as a background. Using spectacular cinematography of our colorful Latino\ncommunities around the country\, the filmmakers intend to expose different points of view\nand help spur the development of powerful dialogue in our communities. This film seeks to\nfight isolation and build bridges of hope and solidarity among our Latino fathers\, their\nfamilies and community activists.\nParticipants are encouraged to watch the film prior to the film discussion.\nFilms are not shown during the discussion. \nFind the Film Here and watch for free with your Phoenix public Library Card!\n\nEl Canto Del Colibri (Course ID #122122)_Flyer \n
