SUMMARY:Film Discussion: SoleJourney
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 75th LGBTQ film discussion\, SoleJourney.\nSoleJourney shows how dedicated and courageous individuals\, following\nin the footsteps of Gandhi and Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, use non-violent\nresistance and acts of civil disobedience to confront anti-gay rhetoric as well as\nreligious and political oppression.\nThis powerful\, inspiring documentary exposes James Dobson’s Focus on\nthe Family\, a well-funded\, politically powerful organization that assaults the civil\nrights of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender people and their families.\nInterweaving stories of courage and commitment and interviews with movement\nleaders such as Mel White of Soulforce\, Judy Shepard of the Matthew Shepard\nFoundation\, and actor and activist Chad Allen\, SoleJourney shows how a small\ngroup of individuals take action against a colossal adversary – including a six-day\, 65 mile march from the Colorado State Capitol in Denver to the Focus on\nthe Family’s headquarters in Colorado Springs.\nWach the film here on Kanopy with your Phoenix Public Library Card!\nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film\n(Course ID #122125)\nThree (3) Cultural Competency Points earned with attendance! This film tells the stories of a variety of long-term residents and what they find so wonderful about life in Cherry Grove. \nWinner of Best Short Film at the Los Angeles Film Review Independent Film Awards \nFind it here and watch for free with your Phoenix Public Library Card! \n \nCherry Grove (Course ID #122123)_Flyer \nThree (3) Cultural Competency Points earned with attendance! \nParticipants are encouraged to watch the film prior to the film discussion. \nFilms are not shown during the discussion.

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: El Canto del Colibri
DESCRIPTION:Much like the seldom-heard song of the hummingbird\, the voices of Latino fathers are\nrarely heard in addressing LGBTQ issues. This film aims to amplify their voices.\n“El Canto del Colibrí\,” is a story of Latino fathers dealing with issues of immigration\,\nfaith\, marriage equality\, machismo\, culture\, and the process of their LGBTQ children\ncoming out. Responding to requests from “Tres Gotas de Agua” audiences around the\nworld\, the filmmakers are taking this journey by inviting Latino men to speak frankly about\ndelicate and deeply personal topics. This film will address political issues about LGBTQ\nfamilies\, social oppression\, shared responsibility and acceptance of LGBTQ people as\nmembers of Latino families.\nThe filmmakers will bring you real stories\, Latino immigrant fathers’ stories\, with\ninterviews and interactions with family members\, and their everyday lives in their\ncommunities as a background. Using spectacular cinematography of our colorful Latino\ncommunities around the country\, the filmmakers intend to expose different points of view\nand help spur the development of powerful dialogue in our communities. This film seeks to\nfight isolation and build bridges of hope and solidarity among our Latino fathers\, their\nfamilies and community activists.\nParticipants are encouraged to watch the film prior to the film discussion.\nFilms are not shown during the discussion. \nFind the Film Here and watch for free with your Phoenix public Library Card!\n\nEl Canto Del Colibri (Course ID #122122)_Flyer \n

SUMMARY:AIDS Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance in partnership with the Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Initiative is asking for your help in combating HIV/AIDS by joining us as a runner\, walker or sponsor for the City of Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Team in the Aunt Rita’s Foundation AIDS Walk Arizona. This year’s AIDS Walk will be held on Saturday\, March 22 at Steele Indian School Park\, 300 E. Indian School Road\, Phoenix 85012. \nThe Phoenix Fast-Track Cities initiative is part of a global initiative to end the HIV epidemic by the year 2030. The initiative encourages individuals to get tested so they know their HIV status\, promotes accessibility and the use of antiretroviral therapy to achieve viral suppression for individuals who are living with HIV\, and aims to eliminate stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Since 1988\, the Aunt Rita’s Foundation has been raising money to provide funding for programs at Phoenix-area hospitals\, clinics\, and non-profit organizations focused on preventing\, treating\, raising awareness about and eliminating stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The Aunt Rita’s AIDS Walk Arizona provides a fun way for us to support these efforts. Walking with\, running with or contributing through the City of Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Team demonstrates the commitment of City of Phoenix employees and their families and friends toward eradicating HIV/AIDS and their insidious impacts while demonstrating our love and support for individuals in our community living with or otherwise impacted by HIV/AIDS. \nThank you very much for supporting this very important effort!

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: Kiki
DESCRIPTION:2017\n1hr 33min\nTV-MA\n\n\n25 years after “Paris Is Burning” introduced the art of voguing to the world\, Kiki revisits New York City’s thriving underground ballroom scene. It’s a larger-than-life world in which LGBTQ youths of color are empowered by staging elaborate dance competitions. It’s also a safe haven for struggling\, at-risk teens who find acceptance within the Kiki community. Going beyond the glamour of the balls highlights the serious challenges facing queer black and Latino youth. \nWatch it with your library card here: Kiki | Kanopy

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: The Last One: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt
DESCRIPTION:The Last One: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt \n2014 1hr 10min\nThe Last One explores the history of the AIDS epidemic in America through the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Originally created in the 1980s to raise awareness of the disease\, the Quilt now highlights the disproportionate impact of HIV on the African American community\, particularly women and youth. The film follows founder Cleve Jones and others involved with the Quilt\, sharing personal stories of stigma\, discrimination\, and the ongoing fight for better care. As the Quilt travels across the country\, it educates diverse communities\, including a high school where a young African American woman born with AIDS speaks out against stigma. With over 1 million Americans living with HIV\, The Last One urges continued awareness\, especially as new infections among young people rise. \nKanopy Link:https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/167021 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120773) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration \nTHE LAST ONE (Course ID #121231)_Flyer

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - The Pearl
DESCRIPTION:An intimate and cinematic profile of 4 transgender women that come out for the first time in their senior years. Set against the backdrop of logging towns in the Pacific Northwest\, the visceral and observational story captures the indelible moment in time as they begin the long journey towards acceptances. \nComing out as trans after decades of hiding from those closest to them\, theirs is a story not of transitioning into womanhood\, but rather explores what it means to leave behind living as a man. \n“…one can’t help but emphasize with the four women as they experience their travails and triumphs. Their courage is often astonishing\, as well as is their outlook.” – Frank Schene\, Hollywood Reporter \nKanopy Link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/5469189 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120773) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration
