Filled with horror at the thought of having a lesbian daughter\, her straight-laced parents (Mink Stole and Bud Cort) ship her off to a summer school that aims to turn kids straight. Determined to get back the summer of fun she had planned\, she decides to go along with the camp’s rules\, that is until she meets the beautiful Graham (Clea DuVall) and finds herself questioning her sexuality for the first time. \n\nWatch it FREE on Kanopy with your library card here: But I’m a Cheerleader | Kanopy \nAttendance will earn you Three (3) Cultural Competency Points! SUMMARY:AIDS Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Phoenix LGBTQ Employee Alliance in partnership with the Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Initiative is asking for your help in combating HIV/AIDS by joining us as a runner\, walker or sponsor for the City of Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Team in the Aunt Rita’s Foundation AIDS Walk Arizona. This year’s AIDS Walk will be held on Saturday\, March 22 at Steele Indian School Park\, 300 E. Indian School Road\, Phoenix 85012. \nThe Phoenix Fast-Track Cities initiative is part of a global initiative to end the HIV epidemic by the year 2030. The initiative encourages individuals to get tested so they know their HIV status\, promotes accessibility and the use of antiretroviral therapy to achieve viral suppression for individuals who are living with HIV\, and aims to eliminate stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. Since 1988\, the Aunt Rita’s Foundation has been raising money to provide funding for programs at Phoenix-area hospitals\, clinics\, and non-profit organizations focused on preventing\, treating\, raising awareness about and eliminating stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The Aunt Rita’s AIDS Walk Arizona provides a fun way for us to support these efforts. Walking with\, running with or contributing through the City of Phoenix Fast-Track Cities Team demonstrates the commitment of City of Phoenix employees and their families and friends toward eradicating HIV/AIDS and their insidious impacts while demonstrating our love and support for individuals in our community living with or otherwise impacted by HIV/AIDS. \nThank you very much for supporting this very important effort!

SUMMARY:Film Discussion: Coming Out Under Fire
DESCRIPTION:1994 1hr 11min NR\n\n\n“Coming Out Under Fire” features nine gay and lesbian veterans who fought in WWII\, sharing their experiences of serving their country while battling discrimination. They recall their struggles to find each other in a heteronormative military and the joy of first love\, only to face witch hunts\, interrogations\, forced treatments\, and dishonorable discharges due to anti-homosexual policies. Based on Allan Bérubé’s book\, the film combines interviews\, declassified documents\, and archival footage to explore the origins of these harmful policies\, rooted in prejudice and flawed psychiatry. \nWatch it FREE with your library card here: Coming Out Under Fire | Kanopy \nAttendance will earn you three (3) Cultural Competancy Points! SUMMARY:Film Discussion: The Last One: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt
DESCRIPTION:The Last One: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt \n2014 1hr 10min\nThe Last One explores the history of the AIDS epidemic in America through the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Originally created in the 1980s to raise awareness of the disease\, the Quilt now highlights the disproportionate impact of HIV on the African American community\, particularly women and youth. The film follows founder Cleve Jones and others involved with the Quilt\, sharing personal stories of stigma\, discrimination\, and the ongoing fight for better care. As the Quilt travels across the country\, it educates diverse communities\, including a high school where a young African American woman born with AIDS speaks out against stigma. With over 1 million Americans living with HIV\, The Last One urges continued awareness\, especially as new infections among young people rise. \nKanopy Link:https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/167021 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120773) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration \nTHE LAST ONE (Course ID #121231)_Flyer

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - The Pearl
DESCRIPTION:An intimate and cinematic profile of 4 transgender women that come out for the first time in their senior years. Set against the backdrop of logging towns in the Pacific Northwest\, the visceral and observational story captures the indelible moment in time as they begin the long journey towards acceptances. \nComing out as trans after decades of hiding from those closest to them\, theirs is a story not of transitioning into womanhood\, but rather explores what it means to leave behind living as a man. \n“…one can’t help but emphasize with the four women as they experience their travails and triumphs. Their courage is often astonishing\, as well as is their outlook.” – Frank Schene\, Hollywood Reporter \nKanopy Link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/5469189 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120773) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Screaming Queens
DESCRIPTION:EMMY Award-winning Screaming Queens tells the little-known story of the first known act of collective\, violent resistance to the social oppression of queer people in the United States – a 1966 riot in San Francisco’s impoverished Tenderloin neighborhood\, three years before the famous gay riot at New York’s Stonewall Inn. \nScreaming Queens introduces viewers to street queens\, cops and activist civil rights ministers who recall the riot and paint a vivid portrait of the wild transgender scene in 1960s San Francisco. Integrating the riot’s story into the broader fabric of American life\, the documentary connects the event to urban renewal\, anti-war activism\, civil rights and sexual liberation. With enticing archival footage and period music\, this unknown story is dramatically brought back to life. \nKanopy Link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/132475 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120772) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Mommie Dearest
DESCRIPTION:Outrageous and controversial\, this is the story of legendary movie star Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) as she struggles for her career and battles the inner demons of her private life. This torment was manifested in her relationships with her adopted children\, Christina (Diana Scarwid) and Christopher (Xander Berkeley). The public Crawford was a strong-willed\, glamorous object of admiration\, but Mommie Dearest reveals the private Crawford\, the woman desperate to be a mother\, adopting her children when she was single and trying to survive in a devastating industry that swallows careers thoughtlessly. The rage\, the debilitating strain\, and the terrifying descent into alcoholism and child abuse are graphically – and unforgettably – depicted in this film\, based upon Christina Crawford’s best-selling book. \nKanopy Link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/11222390 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID #120771) \nWebEX link will be provided through the PHXYou registration

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Beyond the Straight and Narrow: Queer and Trans Television in the Age of Streaming (2023)
DESCRIPTION:This documentary picks up where “Further Off the Straight and Narrow” left off in 2006. How did the rise of LGBTQ visibility\, political progress\, and digital technologies in the 2000s come together to offer the abundance of complex queer and transgender representations we see today? The streaming services Netflix and Amazon Prime attracted audiences’ attention with nuanced and intersectional queer and trans narratives when they debuted the original series “Orange is the New Black” and “Transparent.” Legacy channels had to develop more complex and sustained LGBTQ storylines to compete. Queer and ally showrunners use their growing influence to create well-written\, diverse roles\, and audiences hold producers accountable through social media. And when viewers don’t see images that represent them in the media mainstream\, a rich array of independent web series offers authentic\, community-sustaining narratives. Our digitally connected world circulates mainstream and independent queer and trans television through both official and informal networks. Yet queer and trans television is facing cultural challenges to the presence of LGBTQ in our media\, our schools\, athletics\, and public space. And as distribution channels are moving from niche to mass audiences once again\, we cannot take for granted that distinctive LGBTQ characters and plotlines will be a taken-for-granted staple of our television universe. Long-fought cultural struggles persist over who gets to exist in our national imagination. \nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film – Session 026 (Course ID # 119398) \nKanopy Link – https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/13744220 \nWebEx link will be provided after registration in PHXYou

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Rainbow’s End – The European LGBTQ Movement (2006)
DESCRIPTION:Rainbow’s End is a revealing and entertaining multinational journey throughout Europe\, examining the progress of the LGBTQ movement during the mid-aughts. From parades and protests in Warsaw and Krakow to touching personal stories with social\, religious and political insights\, the film delves in every corner of the debate from street activism to the United Nations in Geneva\, Switzerland. A starting point for any relevant discussion regarding LGBTQ rights within Europe and throughout the world. Canvassing the European countryside\, Rainbow’s End covers significant territory from Berlin partygoers looking for an online hookup who stumble upon an activist organization’s website and rethink the relationship between gay culture and the internet to an English man fighting for the basic human rights of his lover who has been deported to Russia. The film delves into gay Arab men in the Netherlands\, Polish protesters invoking memories of Auschwitz\, and the violent hate crimes\, providing a quick “101” on LGBTQ progress in Europe at the time\, and invoking intersecting philosophies of nationalism\, religion\, and the never-ending battles for human rights. \nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film – Session 024 (Course ID # 119396) \nKanopy Link – https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/174911 \nWebEx link will be provided after registration in PHXYou

SUMMARY:LGBT+: A History in Arizona
DESCRIPTION:LGBT+: A History in Arizona\nArizona’s history of the LGBT+ community begins long before Arizona was a state with the Native American belief of two-spirits and continues through to the seismic shift of Civil Union/ Marriage Equality. There are some surprises along the way such as artists and Arizona connections to Warhol\, Keith Haring\, and those muscle magazines by George Quaintance. Where was the Trans Flag created and where is it now? There is also the little-known story of a 1906 Russian gender pioneer named Nicolai De Raylan. \nAn Emmy nomination for sharing Arizona history is just the latest recognition for Marshall Shore\, Arizona’s Hip Historian. His passion is uncovering the weird\, the wonderful\, and the obscure treasures from our past: the semi-forgotten people\, places\, and events that have made us who we are today. Shore uses storytelling magic\, found film footage\, old photographs\, ephemera\, and artifacts to bring our state’s heritage to life in entertaining and educational presentations. He has developed an almost cult-like following for sharing history through in- person and virtual events. \nBurton Barr Central Library on June 9th at 2pm

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Proper Pronouns (2020)
DESCRIPTION:There are 30 transgender\, ordained ministers in the United States. Six are in North Carolina. Dawn Flynn\, Mykal Shannon\, Liam Hooper\, and Debra Hopkins fight intolerance and discrimination in the Bible Belt and battle narrow-mindedness within the religious community\, fellow state natives\, and their own families. \nIn particular\, the film follows Dawn\, who at 61-years-old was publicly outed by a hairdresser. Being forced to reveal her double life sent Dawn on a downward spiral that cost her pastoral license\, ministry\, threatened her marriage\, and made her wonder if life was still worth living. After therapy and deep self-reflection\, Dawn fought back\, making to decision to transition and start her journey to reclaim her life\, finally finding the courage to embrace her truth and the calling to help others embrace theirs. But her battle for this new life left collateral damage such as her 30-year-marriage to her wife\, Pam. \nPROPER PRONOUNS is an observational film. In order to live as their authentic selves\, some of their loved ones experienced personal identity crises. Each minister bravely preaches from a pulpit despite the danger they face not only as a transgender person living in the South\, but also as transgender ministers navigating their way through local\, state\, and national governing bodies who decide what it means to be a human being. \nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film – Session 023 (Course ID # 119395) \nKanopy Link – Kanopy Link – https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/11421590
