SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Rock Hudson's Home Movies: The Life and Career of Actor Rock Hudson
DESCRIPTION:A documentary about the career and eventual death from AIDS of actor Rock Hudson. \nRock Hudson’s Home Movies is a compilation of privileged moments from various Hudson vehicles that\, in one way or another\, confirm or deny (and thus serve to reconfirm) the actor’s necessarily concealed homosexuality. \n“It was all up there\,” says Rock Hudson (Eric Farr) at the start of this rule-breaking\, dizzying assortment of clips from Rock Hudson’s Hollywood career that make up Mark Rappaport’s feature film\, ROCK HUDSON’S HOME MOVIES. Employing a narrative commentary from beyond the grave\, the film invents an eclectic form of biography. The closer you look at Hudson’s films\, the more you see the actor winking at us. An award-winning blend of dozens of clips\, ROCK HUDSON’S HOME MOVIES sheds a new and provocative light on one of Hollywood’s greatest legends. \nKanopy link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/508706 \nPHXYou Registration: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Course ID: 116802) \nWebEX link will be found in the PHXYou calendar invite.

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - The Adventures of Priscilla\, Queen of the Desert

The problem is simply getting there intact\, along with their battered\, pink tour bus\, Priscilla\, Queen of the Desert. It’s not easy being a drag queen in the outback! \nPHXYou: LEA100-VLT-LGBTQ Film (Session 009) \nKanopy link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/phoenixpl/video/11553147

SUMMARY:Film Discussion - Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker (1992)
DESCRIPTION:Academy Award winning director Richard Schmiechen (The Times of Harvey Milk) vividly portrays the life and work of the woman described by the Los Angeles Times as “The Rosa Parks of Gay Rights” in Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker. \nDuring the repressive 1950s\, Dr. Evelyn Hooker undertook groundbreaking research that led to a radical discovery: homosexuals were not\, by definition\, “sick.” Dr. Hooker’s finding sent shock waves through the psychiatric community and culminated in a major victory for gay rights – in 1974 the weight of her studies\, along with gay activism\, forced the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its official manual of mental disorders. \nStartling archival footage of the medical procedure used to “cure” homosexuality\, images from the underground gay world of the McCarthy era and home movies of literary icon Christopher Isherwood bring to life history which we must never forget. Dr. Hooker’s insights into gay marriage and the gay community (a term she coined)\, and the filmmakers’ winning approach make this documentary education at its most exciting and enjoyable. This Academy Award nominated film is narrated by Patrick Stewart.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ Film Discussion – James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket (1990)
DESCRIPTION:James Baldwin (1924-1987) was at once a major twentieth century American author\, a Civil Rights activist and\, for two crucial decades\, a prophetic voice calling Americans\, Black and white\, to confront their shared racial tragedy. JAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE OF A TICKET captures on film the passionate intellect and courageous writing of a man who was born black\, impoverished\, gay and gifted. \nJAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE OF A TICKET uses striking archival footage to evoke the atmosphere of Baldwin’s formative years – the Harlem of the 30s\, his father’s fundamentalist church and the emigre demimonde of postwar Paris. Newsreel clips from the ’60’s record Baldwin’s running commentary on the drama of the Civil Rights movement. The film also explores his quiet retreats in Paris\, the South of France\, Istanbul and Switzerland – places where Baldwin was able to write away from the racial tensions of America. \nRegister for this event by clicking here: https://forms.office.com/g/qh9SPTRDMj \nKanopy link: https://phoenixpl.kanopy.com/video/james-baldwin-price-ticket
