Film Discussion: Coming Out Under Fire
“Coming Out Under Fire” features nine gay and lesbian veterans who fought in WWII, sharing their experiences of serving their country while battling discrimination. They recall their struggles to find each other in a heteronormative military and the joy of first love, only to face witch hunts, interrogations, forced treatments, and dishonorable discharges due to anti-homosexual policies. Based on Allan Bérubé’s book, the film combines interviews, declassified documents, and archival footage to explore the origins of these harmful policies, rooted in prejudice and flawed psychiatry.
